The World Needs More Social Entrepreneurs
The State of Social Enterprise
We need more social entrepreneurs.
Social enterprise stands at the intersection of business and social good — developing innovative solutions that not only generate economic value but drive significant social and environmental impact.
Did you know that social enterprise is actually larger than the $1.79 trillion apparel industry and almost twice the size of the $1.01 trillion advertising industry?
There are 10 million social enterprises globally — and the world can support millions more.
The World Economic Forum produced a report on The State of Social Enterprise where they reviewed data from more than 80 countries over 10 years from 2013–2023.
This is the first comprehensive global data set to estimate the size and scope of social enterprises worldwide. The data is meant to inform policymakers about the contribution of social enterprise towards sustainable development, and priorities to improve the enabling conditions for the sector.
“By championing these enterprises and promoting an enabling environment for their growth, we can unlock new pathways for economic development and social progress. Policy-makers, business leaders and ecosystem actors can draw inspiration from the achievements of social enterprises and collaborate to build a future in which business serves as a force for good, benefitting people and the planet alike.”
Why is this important? Social enterprises represent a fundamental shift in how businesses can tackle societal problems on a global scale.
“At a time when the world is grappling with unprecedented social, environmental and economic issues, the scope and scale of social enterprises are under-recognized while their contributions have never been more critical.”
